Sub-Zero and Wolf After the Storm: Safety Steps for Escondido Homes
Power flickering in Escondido or elsewhere in North County? Here is what SDG&E, SoCalGas, the CDC and FoodSafety.gov advise for homes with a Sub-Zero refrigerator or a Wolf range. The source is named for each step.
Safety first
- Gas: SoCalGas advises evacuating the area and calling from a safe location, and calling 911 if the utility cannot be reached. The CDC adds that lights and anything that could spark should be avoided until it is declared safe.
- Water: the CDC says never to operate electrical appliances while standing in water.

Storm background
Storm Rachel’s rain and flooding reached parts of Southern California in October 2026, including the Coachella Valley (KESQ, Oct 11) and Long Beach (Fox LA, Oct 13). We have no source on outages in Escondido, so this guide is for any North County home that saw a flicker, a power cut or water.
If the power flickers or goes out
- Unplug appliances and electronics to reduce overload when power returns, and leave one light on (SDG&E).
- Leave the refrigerator and freezer doors shut. SDG&E notes that opening them lets cold air out.
When the power returns
- Give it a few minutes before switching things on, because a sudden jump in demand can cause problems (SDG&E).
- Bring appliances back gradually and reset clocks and timers (SDG&E).
Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer
- A closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours without power. After that, discard perishable food such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs and leftovers (FoodSafety.gov).
- A full freezer holds about 48 hours, a half-full one about 24 hours (FoodSafety.gov).
- Food above 40°F for more than 2 hours should be discarded, and food should never be tasted to test it (FoodSafety.gov).
Wolf range or cooktop
If your Wolf runs on gas, the gas steps in the safety box apply. If water reached it, the CDC says to let it dry completely before use and to have a certified electrician check anything you are unsure about.
If water got into the kitchen
- Floodwater may contain sewage, so food that touched it should be discarded (CDC).
- Appliances should be completely dry before they are used again (CDC).

Common questions
Do I need to unplug my Sub-Zero during a power cut?
SDG&E recommends unplugging TVs, appliances and electronics during an outage so they are not overloaded when power returns, and leaving one light on to show when service is back.
The power was out overnight. Is the food still good?
Probably not, if the refrigerator door was opened or the outage ran long. FoodSafety.gov says a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours, a full freezer for about 48 hours and a half-full freezer for about 24 hours. When in doubt, throw it out.
My kitchen flooded. What should I do before using my appliances?
The CDC says to keep clear of electrical appliances while standing in water, to let appliances dry completely, and to have a certified electrician check anything you are unsure about.
I smell gas near my Wolf cooktop.
SoCalGas advises evacuating the area and calling from a safe location, and calling 911 if the utility cannot be reached. The CDC adds that lights and other possible sparks should be avoided until officials say it is safe.
